LEARN ABOUT THE EXCITING DISCIPLINE OF AUTOCROSS.
WHAT IS AUTOCROSS?
Autocross is typically a motorsport event that involves drivers racing against the clock on a closed, tight circuit (often on a large parking lot, airstrip, or a temporary track). The goal is to navigate the course, usually defined by cones, in the shortest time possible, and penalties are applied for hitting cones or going off-course. Autocross focuses on the driver’s skill at handling the car in tight corners and quick direction changes. The course is usually quite long compared to motorkhana and khanacross.
Key characteristics of autocross:
- Longer, open courses (compared to motorkhana and khanacross).
- Solo timed runs against the clock, but sometimes with a small field of competitors.
- High emphasis on car handling and the ability to drive smoothly through the course.
WHY SHOULD I TRY AUTOCROSS?
Autocross is a great motorsport for a variety of drivers, from beginners to experienced racers. Here are some types of people who might enjoy and benefit from trying autocross:
Car Enthusiasts and Hobbyists
If you’re passionate about cars and want to test their handling abilities, autocross is an excellent way to experience the limits of your car without the high speeds or risks of traditional racing. Whether you own a sports car, a hot hatch, or even a more everyday vehicle, autocross is a fun and relatively affordable way to engage with your love for driving.
Beginner Drivers or Novices in Motorsport
Autocross is often considered an entry-level motorsport, ideal for people who are new to racing. It doesn’t require a lot of previous racing experience, and the low-speed, controlled environment makes it a safe place to start learning about car control, braking, and cornering techniques. You’ll have the opportunity to improve your driving skills while gaining confidence behind the wheel.
Drivers Who Want to Improve Their Driving Skills
Even if you’re not looking to race professionally, autocross is a great way to improve your skills on the road. The challenges involved, such as quick steering inputs, braking, and throttle control, translate well to everyday driving. Whether you’re looking to become more comfortable with your car’s handling or simply want to improve your reaction time in tight situations, autocross is a great practical training ground.
People with Street Cars (No Need for Specialized Racing Cars)
One of the appealing aspects of autocross is that it doesn’t require a race car or major modifications to your vehicle. While performance cars may have an edge, many autocross events are open to everyday vehicles, including sedans, hatchbacks, and even SUVs. If you have a stock car, you can still compete and have fun.
Track Day Fans Who Want a Taste of Racing
For people who enjoy track days or performance driving events but want a more accessible, budget-friendly alternative, autocross is an excellent choice. It allows you to experience some of the thrills of racing without the high costs and risks associated with traditional circuit racing. It’s especially appealing for those who want to test their skills in a competitive but low-risk environment.
Competitors Looking for Low-Cost Racing
Compared to traditional motorsports like circuit racing or rallying, autocross is relatively low-cost. You don’t need a lot of expensive equipment or extensive modifications to your vehicle to get started. For those who want to compete in motorsport but are on a budget, autocross offers an affordable entry point.
People Who Enjoy a Social and Community-Oriented Environment
Autocross tends to have a laid-back, community-focused atmosphere. Since the events are usually held at local venues (e.g., parking lots, airports), there’s a sense of camaraderie among participants. You can learn from others, enjoy friendly competition, and even meet other enthusiasts who share your passion for cars and driving.
Drivers Looking for a Fun and Safe Outlet for Speed
For those who enjoy the thrill of speed but want to do it in a safer environment than public roads, autocross is an ideal outlet. Because the courses are designed to keep speeds manageable and the event is held in a controlled environment, drivers can safely test the limits of their vehicles without the dangers associated with street racing.
People Interested in Testing Their Car’s Performance
Autocross offers a great opportunity to push your car’s performance limits in a way that’s more structured than just taking it for a spin. You can compare how different cars handle the course, and even if you don’t have a high-performance vehicle, you can still see how it performs relative to others in your class.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN AUTOCROSS?
Autocross is highly inclusive and welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds. Many events allow participants as young as 14 with a valid Motorsport Australia Speed Licence or higher grade or a licence acceptable to Motorsport Australia. Some clubs offer youth programs or junior classes, and there’s no upper age limit. As long as you’re physically able to drive, you can participate.
WHAT TYPES OF VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED IN AUTOCROSS?
Vehicles participating in autocross events must adhere to the regulations set forth by Motorsport Australia, which outline safety, technical, and operational standards to ensure fair competition and participant safety.
These regulations include (but not limited to):
Fire Extinguishers: All vehicles must be fitted with an in-date fire extinguisher that complies with AS/NZS 1841.5 standards. The extinguisher must be securely mounted with a metal bracket and quick-release mechanism, easily accessible to the driver.
Safety Inspections: Vehicles are subject to scrutineering before the event, where officials inspect critical components such as brakes, tires, suspension, and fluid systems to ensure compliance.
Battery Security: Batteries must be securely clamped, with insulated terminals to prevent short circuits.
Fuel Systems: Fuel tanks and lines must be in good condition, with no leaks or loose fittings. The fuel cap must be properly sealed.
Driver Safety Gear: Drivers are required to wear clothing made of non-flammable materials, including long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes, as well as an approved helmet meeting the event’s safety standards.
These rules, alongside class-specific guidelines, help maintain safety and equality across all levels of competition.
For full details, participants should refer to the Motorsport Australia Manual, available on the official Motorsport Australia website.
